If you take medication, ask your health care team whether physical activity will change how the medication works. Drugs for diabetes and cardiovascular disease may cause dehydration, impaired balance and blurred vision. Some medications also can affect the way your body reacts to exercise.

Set your goals

Goal setting is a way to work toward meeting your expectations, and it can help you to stay motivated. When you set goals, consider your fitness level, any health concerns, available time and motivation.

Try setting simple goals that are achievable in a reasonably short amount of time. It’s easy to get frustrated and give up on goals that are too ambitious or that take too long to achieve.

Often, overall goals (outcome goals) can be met through a series of smaller goals (process goals) that build on each other.

For example, if you have high blood pressure, one of your outcome goals should be to reach a target blood pressure level set by you and your health care team. Another might be to lose weight.

Your outcome goals may be:

I will lower my systolic blood pressure by 4 mm Hg and my diastolic pressure by 2 mm Hg within six months.

I will lose 5 pounds in six months.
